As an electrician, I have been called out to examine a home after lightning strikes. The main loss in a home is the sensitive equipment such as your computer and your TV or entertainment center. The best way to handle power surges is through a surge protector. Who needs a surge protector? The short answer is anyone who wants to keep their computer and other sensitive equipment.
Surge protectors are designed to protect your electronic equipment during power surges. A power surge is an increase of high voltage through electrical lines to your house. If you have a power surge to equipment, the power surge may damage the electronic equipment since it is not designed for higher voltage. If that surge in power lasts for three seconds, it is called a surge. But if it lasts for two seconds, it is called a spike.
Surge Protector
There are three ways to protect your sensitive equipment:
Strips are available at any retail store for minimal costs. They are designed to limit voltage. I recommend them for your entertainment center including your TV. UPS (Uninterrupted Power Source) is available at office supply stores. There are two types of UPS systems. One system runs your computer only when the power is shut down. The other system gives power constantly through a battery because it has indirect power association. It has two diverse voltages. One to One transformers can protect your house from lightning.
Nothing can stop lightning, but it is better to be prepared. Protect your sensitive equipment and it will last longer.
