We Aren't Printing Money Here!
Every day we print things in color without thinking about the consequences. Every day, we throw money out the door by using color ink that should have been black and white. Every day, we can reduce our company or home's expenses by using the black and white print setting.

What Can We Do?
Generally, printers will have a setting that can be enabled in the print settings. When you print your document, check for a tab called 'print properties', or 'advanced options'. Under this tab, look for an option called 'monochrome', 'economode' or 'grayscale'. This allows the printer to operate as if your color images were actually B&W images and use black ink to print them out instead of color ink. This is ideal for printing on instructions, directions or recipes from the internet, because color is not required for those kinds of resources to be used.
Remember...
Just because it looks like it's already in black and white doesn't mean it is, as dark purple, green or blue can fool you into using the color ink. Pick monochrome every time to be safe. Just in case, it's good practice to set the color images to print in B&W.
This saves the color ink for the color ink printing that really needs color and ensures that the next time you have to replace an ink cartridge, it's a B&W ink cartridge instead of a Color one. The value of the ink saved can be very significant. For example, on an online ink cartridge supplier, the replacement ink cartridge for my Canon Pixma MX310 will be .99 for the B&W cartridge and .99 for the Color cartridge, an immediate savings. If I print quite a bit, the expenses associated with constantly replacing B&W cartridges over one annum versus color might be large.
On larger, profession laserjet printers, the cost savings can be even higher. For example, black laser toner replacement cartridges for the Xerox Phaser 8860 will run 4.99 online, while replacing the three color components will sum up to 4.97, an almost savings.
All you have to do is pick the monochrome printing option when color isn't needed, and encourage your office mates to do the same, and the ink expenses will decrease quickly.
